About HydroSpine |
||
Hydrospine was formed in 2005 as a spin-off of Cambridge Polymer Group, Inc., who licensed several hydrogel inventions to Hydrospine for spine applications. Cambridge Polymer Group is a contract research laboratory with over 20 years of experience in polymer formulation, analysis, and test design. CPG has licensed instrumentation and material technologies to companies including Zimmer, Biomet, and Thermoelectron. | ||

Steve
is the President of Cambridge Polymer Group, and has over 10 years of
experience in analytical characterization of materials. He has a Ph.D. in
Chemical Engineering from MIT. He has designed test methodologies and
processing steps for the crosslinked polyethylenes used in hip and knee
replacements, and holds several patents in highly crosslinked polyethylene
formulations for orthopaedic applications. Steve also holds patents in
instrumentation and surgical procedures for bone cement use. He chairs
several ASTM task forces on characterization of materials for medical
applications.

Gavin is the Vice President of Research at Cambridge Polymer Group, Inc.. He has a
B.Sc. in Physics from Edinburgh University, specializing in acoustics and fluids, a
Masters in Electronics from Southampton University, specializing in digital
radio communication strategies, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College London, where
he worked on adsorbed polymer layers and colloidal stability. He is an expert in
instrument design, having designed an atomic force microscope for his thesis
and a number of custom instruments at CPG. He has a number of issued patents on
topics as diverse as an extensional rheometer (now marketed as the CaBER), a
method for making biomimetic collagen layers, and on methods for making, and
uses for, hydrogels. Gavin is the main inventor on the hydrogel system licensed
to Hydrospine.

Orhun is the co-Director of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics and Bioengineering Laboratory at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). He is the Alan Gerry Scholar at MGH and is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. He holds a Ph.D. in Material Science from MIT. Through his work at MGH, Orhun is an inventor of a highly crosslinked polyethylene formulation that has been in worldwide clinical use since 1998 for use in total hip and total knee replacements under the trade names Durasul®, Longevity®, and Prolong®. Orhun is also an inventor on the antioxidant-containing polyethylene recently marketed by Biomet under the trade name E-Poly®. He has extensive experience in biomaterials, dynamic biomechanical test design, and regulatory procedures.
